FRIENDSHIP RE-ENERGIZES WOMEN 

Since the beginning of time, women have had strong ties with other women. We know if we call our friends during times of hardships we'll feel better by the time we hang up. In 2002, two female scientists conducting research at UCLA discovered an amazing health connection between friendship and women. Laura Cousin Klein, Ph.D., now an Assistant Professor of Biobehavioral Health at Penn State University, and fellow researcher Shelley Taylor, were able to show how oxytocin (a powerful brain chemical) affects women during stress.  

Both men and women produce oxytocin when under stress. However, Drs. Klein and Taylor's research showed that estrogen enhances the affects of oxytocin, whereas testosterone decreases the affects. This could explain why men tend to respond to stress with a 'flight or fight' response, while women react with a 'tend and befriend' response.  

Drs. Klein and Taylor's study found that when women are faced with chronic illness or death of their spouse, those who have no friends increase their risk of death over a six month period. Women who have many friends decrease their risk of death by 60 percent. It is believed oxytocin plays a critical role, but more research is needed to determine exactly how this brain chemical works.  

The landmark study turned five decades of stress research -- most of it on men -- upside down. It's a fascinating read and provides strong evidence that friends help us live.

Dr. Jay Goldstein, a physician working with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia patients, believes low oxycotin levels play a significant role in the disorders. FIND YOUR JOY 

Yesterday, I spent the entire day with one of my best friends. We joked around as we remembered the "good ole' days" and laughed until our jaws ached. We no longer shop till we drop and instead of munching on fast food, we prefer fat-free salads and a glass of chardonnay. But, not much else has changed and the end result is always the same -- we thoroughly enJOY our time together.

Energy Boost Tip - Do the right thing. Sleep.DO THE RIGHT THING 

I am tired today! Last night I did all the things I tell others not to do. First, I hopped on the computer around 8:30 pm and began working on a project. The creative juices began to flow and ideas flooded my head. The brain chemicals were in overdrive and I was completely wired. 

Then, I decided to call my mom and share my exciting ideas. That conversation got my head flipping and flopping as only a phone call with family can. By the time we hung up, I had enough energy to run a marathon.

Have you heard the saying, "Pride goeth before the fall?" Loosely interpreted it means you will fall flat on your face if your pride gets in the way. 

I don't know about you, but I have been far too slow to ask for help. Somewhere I learned that needing help was a sign of weakness. So…I decided I had to do it ALL by myself. It was exhausting to take on activities that didn't suit my personality or style.

I couldn't stand taking care of all the minute details of my business, but I did because I didn't want to "bother" my assistant. If I knew then what I know now, I would have let go -- hired out and kept it a whole lot simpler!
