The healing power
of walking is almost perfectly summed up in a quote by
the English Historian, G.M. Trevelyan who said "I have two doctors,
my left leg and my right." What's missing? Mention of four legged
healers who helped me recover from the exhaustion of adrenal fatigue
and is the siren of my daily walks, dogs in all shapes and sizes!
Something as simple as walking is challenging for people suffering
from adrenal fatigue. Not only is that "get up and go" gone but
other symptoms including, mild depression and feeling overwhelmed,
make it difficult to make plans with a friend and keep get-together
commitments. I know because I've been there, done that.
Adrenal Gland Energy Boost
A dog is one of the remaining reasons why some people can be
persuaded
to go for a walk. ~O.A. Battista
Unlike people, dogs' schedules are extremely flexible. Anytime is
the perfect time and any distance is just right. They also have a
secret motivational tool - two relentlessly encouraging brown eyes
that won't take "not today" for an answer.
Don't worry if you don't have one lying around the house. Four years
ago I joined my neighborhood dog walking club; a.k.a. my local
animal rescue. To find yours simply go to www.PetFinder.com and
click on "Animal Shelters" link located on the menu bar at the top
of the screen. Most organizations request a minimum of two hours a
week – that's nothing – and you'll receive hours of joy and
self-satisfaction.
When I joined my local animal rescue, I'd just moved to a new town,
was lonely and in the throes of recovering from a metabolic
imbalance called adrenal fatigue.(link 'adrenal fatigue' to an
'adrenal fatigue' page on your blog or website) Those hours spent
pawing around with pups and other volunteers was the perfect way to
make new friends, get a little more exercise, and feed my adrenal
glands the feel-good "fun" endorphins.
Arthritis pain relief
People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a
miracle.
But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in
thin
air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle
which we don't even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green
leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child -- our own two eyes.
All is a miracle. - Thich Nhat Hanh
According to the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and
Health Promotion, arthritis and other rheumatic conditions are the
main cause of disability in the USA. One of the major contributing
factors for this epidemic is inactivity. In fact, over 40-percent of
adults diagnosed with arthritis are physically inactive and
overweight or obese.
The Arthritis Foundation offers not a cure, but a relief plan for
this painful condition and it is called … dog walking. According to
Dr. Patience White "Walking your dog for half an hour or even ten
minutes three times a day will help to significantly reduce pain and
stiffness."
To promote this healthy lifestyle choice the Arthritis Foundation
sponsors a number of dog walks including a "Let's Move Together"
Walk hosted in the spring and a holiday "Jingle Bell Run/Walk." For
more information and to register for arthritis / dog walks visit:
www.arthritis.org Why not invite some girlfriends and take shelter
pups with you? You could dress them up in bright orange "Adopt Me"
vests and help them meet their forever family.
The Bonus Round
If you are seeking creative ideas, go out walking.
Angels whisper to a man when he goes for a walk.
- Raymond Inmon
To make a long story short – my volunteer dog walking stint rebooted
me physically and emotionally. Many a visit I would show up feeling
overwhelmed by a project and leave refreshed with the perfect
solution. Some days I'd walk in there feeling exhausted or blue and
I'd walk out with a smile and a helper's high. Yes, it's real and
volunteer work makes it happen.
I wasn't looking to lose weight but dog walking did that too. In the
first month I lost seven pounds! Since then I've read numerous
articles about the benefits of a varied pace walking program. The
pups led me through this naturally. I'd walk slowly with a senior
Lab then run wild and free with a young hound. Every walk was fresh;
every partner shared their own personality, pleasure and pace.
Now, go find your partner, the animal rescue shelter where you can
give your heart a home. Dr. Post, author of Why Good Things Happen
to Good People, says "Do something small with a big heart and stick
with it." The hours will fly by. Your joy with multiple and your
pain diminish. That's what happened to me. Now, it's your turn.

spurred her recovery from the exhaustion of adrenal fatigue.
